Staff Spotlight: Ms. Bull, ESOL Teacher

Korinne Chiu

Who loves Nancy Drew and keeps a well-stocked treasure box at Laurel Ridge? It's Mrs. Bull, Laurel Ridge's K-2 ESOL (AKA English for Speakers of Other Languages) teacher! Find out more about her day-to-day at LRES below. Next time you see her, ask about her newest t-shirt design or punch needle creation.

1. How long have you worked at Laurel Ridge? How long have you been working for Dekalb County Schools?

I have worked for DeKalb County Schools for 9 years, and all 9 years have been here at The Ridge.

2. What does your day-to-day look like at Laurel Ridge?

My day consists of supporting our English Language Learners in grades kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd. I help support their English language development, help them get acclimated to their new learning environment, while also supporting their academic growth.

I also support our 2nd graders with reading and math through our early intervention program at different times of the day. Once my school day ends, I transition into supporting the aftercare program.

3. What do you want parents and caregivers to know about your role? What about students?

I want parents to know that I am here to help support their child by providing a warm, fun, engaging, and safe learning environment. While I am here to help their child, I am also here to offer any help or support they might need as well. I am available if they have any questions or concerns or if they need resources at home to support their child. I think my students already know they can come to me for anything… especially treasure box!

4. What do you love most about working at a school?

Oh, that's easy...I love my babies!! Even on a bad day, they bring me so much joy.

5. Can you share a favorite moment or success story from your time here?

That's a hard one. I guess my favorite moments and success stories are when my past students come back to see me, and I can see how they've flourished and grown. I love to see my students doing well and succeeding. I think all teachers live for those moments, it means we did our jobs well.

6. What is your favorite children's book or series?

I've always loved the Nancy Drew series.

7. What is your go-to comfort food or favorite treat?

All of my students know that Mrs. Bull loves cookies!

8. Do you have any hobbies or favorite activities outside of work?

I enjoy reading, cooking, playing with my dog, Maxwell, and creating t-shirt designs. I just discovered that I love punch needle. I taught myself over the holiday break and now I'm hooked!

9. Is there anything else you want to share?

I truly enjoy coming to work every morning. I love my students, I work with a remarkable group of teachers, I have an awesome administration, and I'm surrounded by a supportive and caring community… What else can a girl ask for?
